Fort Balaguier : Michelin's recommendations

This fort was built under Richelieu in 1636 and constituted one of the «bolts» protecting the entrance of Toulon harbour. It was taken from the English in 1793 by a young Corsican commander, a certain Bonaparte... It now houses an attractive naval museum, notably describing the sombre history of Toulon penal colony (that of Jean Valjean). From the terrace overlooking the fort's garden and its aviary there is a remarkable view over the coast, from Toulon to the Île du Levant.
