A number of famous people were born or lived in the old houses of this ancient Roman road (cardo). At no 20 is Doctor Gagnon’s house (grandfather of novelist Stendhal). His living quarters, on the second floor, where Henri Beyle spent part of his childhood, is now home to the new Stendhal Museum. Further down, at no 13, is the birthplace of the philosopher, Condillac; the painter, Hébert, lived at no 9; another painter, Fantin-Latour lived at no 8 and a politician Casimir-Perier at no 4.
