Construction work for the tramway led to the discovery of the Gallo-Roman fortifications of Gratianapolis. Metal markers have been set into the paving stones to indicate the outline. The only vestige that remains of the vast medieval bishopric buildings is the Clérieux Tower, rising above the rooftops. In the centre of the square, the Fountain of the Three Orders is inhabited by figures representing the clergy, nobility and third-estate.
