The monastery is entirely made up of hermitages – cells where the Carthusian monks live their solitary lives of prayer and contemplation. Eighteen rooms tell the history and depict the daily lives of the hermits through countless documents and objects of daily life, but also films and testimonials by monks and their relatives. In addition to reconstitutions of the cloisters and a new hermitage, the new exhibition area reveals one of the Order’s treasures, a map collection, together with a model of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. The modern, pleasant layout of the museum provides a fascinating insight into what has motivated the sons of Saint Bruno to seek refuge and solace here for over 900 years.
