At an altitude of 2 040m, St-Véran is the "highest village in which God's bread is eaten", as one of its 15 sundials reminds visitors; it is also one of the most beautiful villages in France. Built entirely of wood and stone, its chalets have vast storage lofts and long galleries where cereals continued to ripen after the harvest. Each of its six districts is isolated from the other to avoid the risk of fire. The last village in the valley, this is the departure point for some magnificent walks.
