When the dam was built in 1952, the old village of Tignes gradually disappeared under the water. The brave inhabitants moved 6km higher up, near a lake, and built a new village there. It is now a modern resort with one of the world's largest expanses of ski slopes. Its reputation was enhanced by the 1992 Olympic Games.
