This romantically-situated abbey is where many members of the House of Savoie chose to be buried. 42 princes and princesses rest here, from Umberto III, who died in 1189, to the last king of Italy (1869-1947), as well as Charles-Félix and Marie-Christine. The latter were responsible for restoring the abbey from 1824 to 1843 and also for reviving the tradition of being buried there. The abbey, entirely restored in neo-Gothic style in the 19C, stands on the grandiose site of a promontory that dominates the Lac du Bourget.
