Along with the Maurienne, the Tarentaise is one of the two major Savoie valleys heading up to the passes used for centuries by travellers to cross from France into Italy. This is livestock farming country, notably its own Tarine cattle. From Moûtiers to Bourg-St-Maurice, minor roads follow the “right” side of the valley past small farms and orchards, facing the wooded “wrong” side, beyond which rises Mont Pourri (3 779m).
