Espelette : Michelin's recommendations

An ancient feudal settlement, Espelette's tortuous streets, lined with red and white houses, stretch over a large area. It is a centre for growing red pimentos (they hang on houses and in kitchens), and also trades in the «pottok» (there is a market-fair at the end of January), the little horses that live semi-wild in herds on the uninhabited slopes of the mountains. Formerly used in mines, the docility and small size of these horses make them ideal for pony trekking.
