La Bastide-Clairence
: Michelin's recommendations
This bastide (fortified town), founded in 1312 to provide the kingdom of Navarre with an access to the sea, attracted a varied population: Basques, Gascons as well as pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela and, in the 17C, a Jewish colony (evidence is available in the cemetery). Today, many craftsmen bring life to this lovely Labourd village, with its traditional houses and typical Basque church.
