The castle and half-timbered houses of La Rochefoucauld are full of character, but the town is, in actual fact, famous for its "charentaises" (slippers). It was in the time of Louis XIV that their production began as a cottage industry using left-over fabric. The slippers' success was such that they even found their way into court.
