The castle of Roquetaillade is full of surprises! Built on a rocky spike, where cave-dwellings have been inhabited since pre-historic times, a visitor would expect to find nothing but medieval austerity behind its thick, crenellated walls. But that would be without reckoning on Viollet-le-Duc, who during his 19th Century restoration and re-building gave free rein to his neo-gothic fantasies. The results are hard to credit, and seem more like the backdrop to a dream!
