Cathedral of Saint Cecilia : Michelin's recommendations
We had to show the heretics what we were using for firewood- that was the postulation of Bernard de Castanet when , in 1282, he began construction of this rather sturdy looking brick cathedral-fortress to which you gain entry via a canopied porch located middle South Side. Inside, the immense nave is intersected by an unusual rood-screen that can easily be likened to a veritable lacework in stone, with: pinnacles, interlacings, arches with finely decorated keystones, the flamboyance is confined solely to the architectural extravaganza! On the exterior wall the statuary represents the zenith of Gothic sculpture, with a Burgundian influence, manifest in the realistic expression of the faces. The immense painting of the Last Judgement which has three levels of which the last one, Hell, is a veritable masterpiece sculpted in the late 15th C by French artists. The lazy ones amongst you should not be too eager to rejoice, as even if your preferred sin is omitted it is simply because the panel showing your fellow sinners being thrown into the flames of hell has disappeared .. As for the arch , its sides decorated by the artists from Bologna - it marks the zenith of Italian Rennaissance Quattrocento.
