Combining Gavarnie and Barèges Valleys, Luz-Gavarnie is mainly known for its Cirques (Gavarnie, Troumouse, Estaubé) with different overlapping layers of limestone that are sometimes clearly visible. Many of the summits are over 3000m. Here again the development of hydrotherapy opened the area up in the 19C when paved roads were built. The valley began attracting and inspiring a number of ‘‘Pyrénéistes’’, naturalists, artists and writers starting at that time.
