La Romieu
: Michelin's recommendations
La Romieu is located on the Way of St. James which, coming from Le Puy, went through Moissac, then Flaran (GR 65). This stopover – the word romieu was a name for pilgrims on the way to Compostella – was also an ecclesiastical city surrounded by ditches and walls. Bearing witness to this is its collegiate church, built in the 14C by Cardinal Arnaud d’Aux, chamberlain for the Avignon popes Clement V and John XXII. Its two towers, the octagonal tower and Cardinal’s tower dominate the surrounding Gascon countryside.
