Montpellier-le-Vieux is not a town but the amazing result of erosion and rainwater over the Causse Noir dolomite rock. Explored during the late 19C, this mass of rocky outcrops has gradually been freed from dense undergrowth, to the delight of nature lovers. Today, signposted paths cover its 120ha, leading visitors to rocks of the strangest shapes. Some formations have even been given names: Skittle, Crocodile, Sphinx, Mycenae Gate… The Rampart commands a splendid view of the entire chaos.
