The old capital of the Rouergue region, Rodez is located within the bounds of two very different regions, the dry plateaus of the Causses and the humid hills of Ségala. Perched on a butte, the old town dominates the Aveyron riverbed from a height of 120m. In turn it is dominated by the impressive tower of its fortified cathedral built in red sandstone. This is 87 metres high and confirmed the high and mighty power of the bishops of Rodez.
