Gazing upon the ruins of the medieval castle and the vineyard-covered slopes, it is remarkable to think that the countryside around Tautavel has been inhabited by man and beast since 700 000 BC. In the foothills of the Pyrenees, this little Corbières village is renowned for its prehistoric remains. A hunter estimated to have lived here some 450 000 years ago has even been named after the village: "Tautavel Man".
