At approximately 50km from the central Pyrenees, Toulouse has been the capital of Occitania since the time of Raymond and the Counts of Toulouse. During the crusade against the Albigensians, they symbolised the resistance of well-read and tolerant Southern France against the invasion of Simon de Montfort's "Barons from the North".
