The best view is from a rocky spur in the centre of which stands a statue of the Virgin Mary (45min on foot there and back). The amphitheatre is enormous, large enough, it is claimed, to accommodate three million spectators. Carpeted in meadow grass and flowers, it is enclosed by an almost unbroken rampart of mountains 10km around. The highest point is Pic de la Munia (alt 3,133m), identifiable by the remains of its hanging glacier. Below this, on the left, are twinned rock pinnacles known as the "Two Sisters".
