There are hardly any elements left from the castle desired by King Richard the Lion Hearted. The small castle was separated from the main fort by a deep ditch. Only the tallest of the five towers, which defended the small castle, remains. It was the one which the soldiers of Philippe Auguste attacked. A narrow path skirts round the castle. A closer look to the donjon's foundation will let you see how they skilfully made use of the rock's natural form. Notice the casemates dug on the right in the rock and used to store food for the garrison. On entering the fort's surrounding walls, by the footbridge which replaced the drawbridge, one can admire the 8 m diameter donjon with 5 m thick walls. It is made of three levels which are connected by moving wooden stairs.
