Situated between Paris and Chantilly. not far from Montmorency, Écouen Castle is in the middle of a vast 17 ha estate. It was built on top of a hill by order of constable Anne of Montmorency and dates back to the 16C. It was given to the Condés during the first half of the 17C before being confiscated during the Revolution. The exterior of this genuine architectural jewel of French Renaissance style, is made up of a main body to which angled detached houses topped with pediment sculptured skylights have been added. There are porticoes in different places of the building. Notice the portico of the South wing called the «Slaves» portico. It owes its name because it housed the famous sculptures by Michelangelo. In 1806, Napoleon st added the first educational home for the daughters of the members of the Legion of Honour. Since 1962, this building became the property of the Ministry of Culture and soon after, the National Renaissance Museum was established here.
