Cour du Cheval-Blanc ou des Adieux
: Michelin's recommendations
Famous for its horseshoe staircase built by Jean du Cerceau under Louis XIII, this former bailey was used only by domestics, but its generous size soon earmarked it for official parades and tournaments. It became known as the White Horse Court after Charles IX set up a plaster cast of the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome. Its other name is of Imperial origin. It was here that Emperor Napoleon, who had turned it into the main courtyard, made his farewells on 20 April 1814 before leaving for the island of Elba.
