The Emperor Napoleon liked to stay in the château that once belonged to Francis 1 and made a certain number of alterations to it. It was from the top of the horseshoe staircase that he bid his last farewell to his companions at arms in 1814. A tour of the Grands Appartements (ground floor state rooms) will take you to the sumptuous galerie François I, decorated with the King's emblem, the famous salamander, the fine King's staircase decorated by Primaticcio and Nicolo dell'Abate, the magnificent Ballroom completed in the reign of Henry II by Philibert Delorme and the royal apartments overlooking the Oval Courtyard. The visit also includes a Chinese Museum, set up in the Second-Empire by Empress Eugénie, a museum devoted to Napoleon I and his family, the apartments of the Empress Josephine with Louis XV panelling and the galerie des Cerfs, a gallery decorated with paintings of the great royal residences at the time of Henry IV as well as a number of hunting trophies. Do not miss the Carp Pool, with a pavilion where meals were served, the jardin de Diane, a garden with an elegant fountain representing the huntress with four bronze dogs, the grotte du jardin des Pins, with its monstrous atlantes and the superb English-style garden. The park, created in the reign of Henry IV, foreshadowed the Grand Canal of Versailles to be created sixty years later.
