Set in the Almont valley, the château of Vaux-le-Vicomte («vaux» being a place name relating to the Latin vallis meaning valley) is a 17th Century masterpiece. It was built for Nicolas Fouquet, who brought together all the finest artists of the period: the architect Louis Le Vau, the decorator Charles Le Brun and the gardener André Le Nôtre. It aroused the envy of King Louis XIV.
