Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
: Michelin's recommendations
This château is one of the most handsome masterpieces of the 17C. It was built for Nicolas Fouquet by major artists such as Louis Le Vau, Charles Le Brun and André Le Nôtre between 1656 and 1661. At a party on 17 August 1661, Louis XIV became jealous of so much ostentation and had the Superintendent Fouquet sentenced to life imprisonment. This castle was sold many times over and in 1875 was bought by an industrialist, whose heirs continued the restoration and conservation work. A walk in the grounds, designed by Le Nôtre, is an unforgettable experience
