The gardens of Versailles in your iPod

The gardens of Versailles in your iPod

Via Michelin - 2006-06-19

As Sofia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette triumphs at the cinema, the iPod makes its debut in the gardens of the Château de Versailles. Podibus is launching audio tours, film clips and photos to podcast on your digital walkman.

Launched in 2003, the Grand Versailles project aims to recover historic Versailles by restoring the château and gardens to all their splendour. Numerous means are being implemented to protect and promote its heritage, by improving the performance of the various departments that manage it and notably by creating a research centre. As part of this huge project, which will be spread over 17 years, Grand Versailles numérique (digital Grand Versailles) is an experimental work site intended to introduce new technologies to the château of Louis XIV. On the agenda: WIFI, high-speed mobile telephony and iPod, Apple’s little digital personal stereo.

Podibus is consequently launching a series of tours of the gardens of Versailles in the form of audio recordings in several languages, to podcast on an iPod. “Classic” tours, as popularised by audio guides, but also – for the lucky owners of a video iPod – film clips, images and videos: a whole multimedia content likely to throw new light on this place before, during or after your visit.
From Marie-Antoinette’s hamlet via the Petit and Grand Trianon, you can stroll around while listening to a commentary recorded by an actor. Those who are put off by waffle – albeit erudite and proclaimed by a talented actor – can explore the fountains, groves and pools to music written by Lully in honour of the king himself. A partner of this operation, Apple is providing about forty iPods free of charge during the entire duration of the operation, which will begin on 11th July.
