Built for the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, the building housing the aquarium is a fine example of Art Deco architecture. The bas-relief by Alfred Janniot that decorates the façade illustrates life in the colonies; France's so-called civilising role is depicted via the grand figures whose names are engraved on the façade giving onto rue Armand-Rousseau. The aquarium boasts some 5 000 species from hot and temperate zones and an impressive crocodile pit.
