In 1662, the Louvre Palace's outside façade on the Paris side, was still not as Louis XIV desired. The king preferred Bernin's project to those of three French architects: Perrault, Le Vau and d'Orbay. Overlooking the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, this majestic façade was finally finished in 1811 (and whose true height was discovered in 1967, when the moats were dug out), illustrates the classical layout of the Grand Siècle.
