This tastefully modernised museum occupies the Paris wing of the Palais de Chaillot. Created in 1879 from an idea by the architect Viollet-le-Duc, it highlights the main French monuments from the Middle Ages to the 18C via moulds, models and full-scale reproductions, exhibited in a huge gallery with Pompeian red walls.
