Place du Châtelet : Michelin's recommendations

This square is named after a fortress built here to protect the north entrance to the city. Today, it is framed by two theatres built by Davioud (1862). The Châtelet, Théâtre Musical de Paris has hosted Diaghilev’s Russian ballet company, the tenor Caruso, Mahler, who conducted his Second Symphony here, and Nijinsky, who danced the Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. The Théâtre de la Ville is now a venue for popular culture. The Fontaine du Châtelet (1806-07) commemorates Napoleon’s victories.
