A major artery heading to the east of the city, this street was often used by the French monarchy. From the 14C this unusually wide street became a popular setting for gatherings and celebrations. The area in front of the church, which had its cobbles removed and sand placed on the ground, was once used for jousting. In the 17C, rue Saint Antoine was considered the most beautiful thoroughfare in Paris.
