Standing among pools, salt marshes, scrubland and canals, the long honey-coloured walls of Aigues-Mortes are sometimes tinged pink by the rays of the setting sun. This is the town from which St Louis embarked upon the Crusades and it was an important harbour until the creation of the port of Sète. Today it lives reclusively and quietly in the shadow of its walls, dreaming nostalgically of its prestigious and historic past.
