Constance Tower Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Templar knights and wayward soldiers are among the previous inmates of this tower. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1683), however, it was full to bursting, mainly with Protestants from the Cévennes or Vivarois regions, including Camisard Abraham Mazel, (he escaped in 1703), and a numerous women, one of whom, Marie Durand, was here for 38 years. She has come to symbolise the place; the scratched word “RESISTER” engraved on the coping of the central well is attributed to her.
