Visit an architectural treasure trove at Nîmes, once the ancient ciy of Nemausus. Weave your way through the Roman amphitheatre and near-perfect temple built during the reign of Caesar Augustus. Continue to Uzès, a town bubbling with southern charm and authenticity.
The pride of Nîmes is the Maison Carrée, one of the most beautiful Roman temples in Europe. You'll also visit the amphitheatre which in ancient times held 20,000 spectators. It is still used today, being far better preserved than its counterparts, including the Coliseum in Rome.
Afterwards, head just outside of Nîmes to Uzès. This charming town has an impressive architectural legacy, thanks to a unique history which includes its former position as the first duchy of France. Wander down narrow cobblestone streets past the ducal palace, Fenestrelle tower, Episcopal Palace, and cathedral. Walk through the arcades and pass the medieval houses surrounding the Place aux Herbes, the epicentre of town life. Complete your day with a visit to the nearby Pont du Gard aqueduct, which has survived almost two millennia.
