The popes of Avignon contributed to the development of the Châteauneuf vineyard, the repute of which dates back to the mid-18C. Today, the 320 Châteauneuf du Pape vineyards add up to 3 200ha of vines. Don’t miss the Veraison festival in the first weekend in August, or the Musée du Vinn where you can find out more about the famous AOC label of quality. The papal fortress affords a superb view over the Rhône Valley, Roquemaure, and Avignon with the Palais des Papes against the backdrop of the Alpilles; the Luberon, Mt Ventoux, Dentelles de Montmirail mountains can also be taken in.
