Ranked "one of the most beautiful villages in France", Gordes stands on a cliff overlooking the Imergue and Calavon valleys opposite the Luberon. It is pleasant to walk along the calades – narrow cobblestone roads typical of the region – as they wind their way between old dry-stone houses that rise up in tiers to the castle walls. Here and there you get a glimpse of the sun-drenched scrubland way below. We recommend a visit in early spring or autumn to appreciate the village's magic without the crowds of visitors who flock here in high season.
