For centuries the only way into this valley was via dangerous mule tracks over passes which remained snowbound until very late in the season. This isolation has left the valley unspoilt, making it ideal for hiking, skiing and white-water sports. To explore it, follow the course of the River Ubaye through the Maurin Valley, strewn with tiny hamlets. Your path will cross the GR 5, which leads up to the Pont du Châtelet and the village of Fouillouse. The route continues on to Maljasset, the starting point for a 3hr trek up to the Col de Girardin.
