Jacques Brel chose to spend the last years of his life in Atuona. He regularly flew his aeroplane Jojo, a Beechcraft, between here and Tahiti as a service to the local population. The aeroplane is on display in the Brel Cultural Centre, a hangar where you can also read his song lyrics and extracts from his correspondence.
