The mountainous Gambier Islands, the most remote in French Polynesia, were chosen in the 19C by the priests Laval and Caret as the base for their evangelising mission. This past lives on in Mangareva, where a rich religious heritage intermingles with classic Polynesian images: stunning beaches, blue lagoons and coconut palms.
