Augsburg
: Michelin's recommendations
Augsburg’s mansions, churches and town hall all date from the city’s golden age in the 15C and 16C. The city bears the mark of Augsburg’s official architect, Elias Holl, and is one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps. Augsburg was also home to famous artists and humanists, such as the painter Hans Holbein the Elder and the playwright Bertolt Brecht. Crossed by a tributary of the Danube, the River Lech, which divides into canals in the lower town, Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria and an important industrial centre.
