The birthplace of Roswitha von Gandersheim (10 C), Germany's first poetess, is now an extremely popular hot spring and salt-water spa. The cathedral with its twin octagonal towers butressing the façade dominates the historic town centre. Inside are two very fine altars, one 15C and the other 16C. Around the market place are well-reserved half-timbered houses, in particular the Renaissance Town Hall.
