Where Ortenburg castle stands today, there once stood fortifications completed around AD 600 and enlarged by Heinrich I in 958 as a frontier fort. Two devastating fires destroyed the fortress, which was to be rebuilt in Late Gothic style by Matthias Corvin, King of Hungary, in the 15C. The tower on the north wing still bears a relief portrait of the Hungarian king. In 1698, at the height of the Baroque period, three Renaissance gables were added to the castle!
