Currently undergoing work for the construction of a metro line and a shopping centre, the Alexanderplatz, known to locals as the “Alex”, is a huge open-air building site. However, the Socialist-style architecture of its concrete buildings and its enormous esplanade make this an interesting place to visit. The Fountain of Friendship between Peoples replaced the statue of Berolina, an allegory of the city, at the end of the Second World War. The /bUrania World Clock/b is now the symbol of the square.
