Humboldt University has been housed in the former palace of Prince Henry, brother of Frederick II, since 1810. The statue of one of its founders, Wilhelm von Humboldt, stands to the left of the entrance opposite that of his brother, the geographer Alexander von Humboldt. The university, which now has 20,000 students, has been associated with several famous German names: Fichte was its first rector; Hegel, Einstein and Planck all taught here; and Heine and Marx both studied here for a while.
