This attractive square, laid out by Peter Joseph Lenné in the mid 19C, is bordered to the west by an old hospital built from 1845-47 for the order of Deaconesses. Abandoned and used by squatters during the 1970s, the building now houses a cultural centre, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, which features work by around twenty artists hosted by the centre every year. To the north of the square, St Thomas’ evangelical church (1864-69) was built by Friedrich Adler.
