It was the great Prussian anthropologist Virchow who was responsible for the creation of the old Museum of German Folklore in 1889. After the Second World War, a second folk museum was founded in the west of the city. The collections of the two museums were combined in 1992. The present Museum of European Cultures exhibits objects which document folk traditions from the 16C to the present day.
