Moselle Valley
Moselle Valley
By car, 137 km, 1 dayAn excellent introduction to verdant and authentic Germany, the Moselle valley has picturesque villages like Bernkastel-Kues and its wine estate, visits to convents like the one at Marienburg, or castles, such as at Eltz. Take the time to make stops because this valley can be discovered equally by foot, bicycle or during a cruise.

Bernkastel-Kues
Colourful and mostly half-timbered houses line this small sloping square in the middle of which is the 17C St Michael fountain.
This former convent stood on an exceptional site at the narrowest point in the meander of the River Zell. The restaurant terrace and the wooden tower afford impressive views of the river and vineyards.
This castle is crowned with several towers and turrets. The interior boasts an extensive collection of period furniture and a treasury. It also houses a collection of paintings, including the Madonna with Grapes by Lucas Cranach. Don’t miss the lower hall with its timbered ceiling (15C), the Knights' Hall and the kitchen dating from the late Middle Ages. The nearby Thurant and Kobern-Gondorf castles are also of interest.
From the top of the pediment (107 steps) of Wilhelm I's statue, there is a view over the city and the right bank of the Rhine, dominated by the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein.
