In 1949, the birthplace and residence of Ludwig van Beethoven became the «temporary» capital of the new republic and was given the nickname of «federal village» (Bundesdorf). This sparked off the city's expansion and Bonn, which was only to be the provisional capital, occupied the role of seat of the German government for over forty years. With the reunification of Germany, it continues to play a vital role as eight of the ministries are still located here.
