Emden : Michelin's recommendations
Despite the silting up of its port in the 16C, Emden has regained its former position as chief port of Westphalia, specialising in shipbuilding and the export of cars. The stocking of iron ore for the Ruhr means that gigantic tankers can often be seen in the harbour, which also has installations for the processing of North Sea gas. As a result, an unusual atmosphere permeates the town. Emden is also a good departure point for tours of the East Frisian islands and the Island of Borkum (regular ferry services).
